Faith-based Military News Site Offers the Positive
AGreaterFreedom.com, a faith-based military news site, brings both stories of faith and service together for the military community and its supporters.
Sara Horn, the publisher of AGreaterFreedom.com, is the author of A Greater Freedom: Stories of Faith from Operation Iraqi Freedom, a book she did in 2004 with executive editor Oliver North after traveling twice to the Middle East with photojournalist Jim Veneman to document stories of faith in the military. She is believed to be the first denominational reporter ever to report from a war zone; the stories she covered offered a different perspective of the first year of the Iraq war and showed what God was doing in the lives of service men and women as well as their families.
"We got such a great response from readers after the book came out," Horn said. "The most common reaction was 'we just don't hear stories like these on the nightly news.'" The book, nominated as a 2005 finalist for the Evangelical Press Association’s Gold Medallion Award, relays stories that moved beyond military operations and battles and went right to the heart of those serving both their country and God. Testimonies of God’s grace and miracles of safety run throughout the book as well as the story of Iraqi Christians and their new freedoms thanks to the fall of the former regime. Horn decided to create a web site that would offer more of the same type of stories.
The mission of AGreaterFreedom.com is to equip, inform and encourage members of the military and their families through the use of news, feature stories and commentary that will lead people to a more passionate faith in Jesus Christ as well as show the positive of what our military is doing throughout the world. It is the desire of the AGF publishers and editorial team to be a reminder that good is happening and that God is in control – in times of peace and in war.
The site offers feature articles and interviews with service members from all branches currently serving in the field as well as articles on more practical things like marriage and parenting issues.
